The national focus on police-involved fatalities added intensity to the 2014-2015 Community Building and Dynamics of Community class of the Law Enforcement Leadership Master's Program in Minnesota.
In the core course taught by Mirja Hanson, Millennia consultant and adjunct professor at the University of Saint Thomas, police officers study the issues, imperatives and initiatives for strengthening community-police relations and developing inter-organization partnerships for "building rather than arresting our way out of crime."
One case study featured the Colombia Heights (MN) Police Department that serves a community with the same demographics as Ferguson (MO) and has a remarkably high trust rating. Chief Scott Nadeau's transformation of the agency was featured in a recent Huffington Post story entitled The Simple Strategies That Could Fundamentally Change How Communities View Their Police.
