For 15 years, Karen has focused her work in the field of education, providing planning, training and evaluation services to the Chicago Public Schools (CPS). Her passion to improve the lives of students has taken her to more than 200 schools, facilitating school planning, designing innovative curriculum and evaluating new educational experiments. For 10 years, she evaluated five 21st Century Community Learning Centers in Logan Square. Now she is evaluating Small Learning Communities for the Board of Education's grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Karen has expanded her involvement to include working with Chicago communities interested in creating a sustainable environment. Partnering with staff of the Institute of Cultural Affairs (a United Nations-recognized private voluntary organization focused on local community development), she has co-developed a plan to highlight and support Chicago's 77 communities in 2012. She has facilitated sessions for Citizens for a Greener Evanston, FACT and Transition Rogers Park.

As a group process facilitator, Karen has conducted participatory strategic planning sessions, program development and evaluation engagements with state agencies, the federal government, and private and voluntary organizations throughout the Midwest and in nine other nations.

Karen is a founding member of the International Association of Facilitators, (IAF) and is an IAF Certified Professional Facilitator (CPF). She holds a master's degree in Leadership Development and a certificate in Educating Adults from DePaul University. She serves as an adjunct faculty for DePaul's School for New Learning Master's Program, where she co-teaches "Facilitating Adult Learning."
