They seek to communicate their missions or funding intent clearly and outline the processes for receiving funds in unambiguous ways. Many are also increasingly interested in fully understanding the results generated by the projects they fund. Lessons learned and recommendations about how to do things better in the future are increasingly important.

Millennia has successfully supported this partnership-building process in several ways. We assisted one national foundation in a survey of its grantees in a specific grantmaking arena, developing a sketch of strengths and weaknesses. Building on the survey results, we facilitated a daylong visioning session with grantees from around the country. This dialogue proved invaluable as Millennia guided the foundation through its own strategic planning process. In other cases, Millennia has developed guidelines for new funding initiatives and conducted long-term participatory evaluations that engage grantees in ongoing reflection on their work, building learning communities and strengthening results.
